Described in one Metal Mag as “Pantera Vs Priest enter the cage to fight for the glory of Metal while 3 Inches Of Blood and Candlemass cheer them on!” A descriptor I find quite apt. Listening to Destroy The Machines... you will hear many other bands’ influences shining through but not to the extent that you could say they are a tribute band to such-and-such. Man Of The Hour has fused all the good stuff that has influenced them into a sound of their own. What does stand out is their creative use of vocal and guitar harmonies. Frontman, Tommy Concrete, has a range from stirring mid-toned choral to face shredding helium shrieks which is offset by drummer Bud ‘The Engine’s’ subterranean growls. The tracks are driven by the mind-blowingly technical riffs of dual lead guitars worn by Stevie Power and Matt Justice and Soo C. Daimond dials in enough motor driven low end to keep things heavy and dark. Tendon snapping, fret-ripping solos are also an integral part of Destroy The Machines…, they are well structured and fit-in with the rest of the music, not egotistical guitar widdly-wankery bolted on that says ‘Hey, look what I can do’. And, as I mentioned, the guitar harmonies throughout the entire album are what makes the fur on your tail fuzz right up.

Have all this mastered by Annihilator’s Jeff Waters and you have one awesome, kick-ass slab of Heavy Metal that will appeal to fans of a wide range of Metal sub-genres.

Kyuss/Queens of the Stone Age is a split EP which was released in December 1997. The first three songs are performed by Kyuss and the last three songs by guitarist Josh Homme's next band, Queens of the Stone Age, and is widely considered to be Queen's first release.

This rare, out-of-print CD includes a Kyuss cover of the song 'Into the Void' by Black Sabbath. 'If Only Everything' is an early raw version of the song 'If Only', which appeared on Queens of the Stone Age's eponymous debut album. This disc also contains the original version of 'Born to Hula' which would later be re-recorded as 'Born to Hula 2000' and appear as a b-side on one edition of the 'Lost Art of Keeping a Secret' single, and later as a track on the Stone Age Complications EP. 'Spiders and Vinegaroons' would would not see anouther release, though it was used as the song played over the PA before many of their early concerts. 'Fatso Forgotso' and 'Fatso Forgotso Phase II (Flip the Phase)' were later re-released on Muchas Gracias: The Best of Kyuss.

This is a collection of demos and rarities for hardcore Trouble fans only. This is not one of those discs anyone is going to spend a whole lot of time listening to due to the very uneven production throughout. The first three songs come from the first Trouble demo. These songs are very roughly recorded. As well, the sound drops out in several places and there are parts where you can hear the source tape has been chewed up by a tape deck. (Never did like cassettes!) The songs from the limited edition independent CD "For the Road" are spectacular, as is the bonus track from Plastic Green Head ("Till the End of Time"). These songs alone make the CD worth purchasing. It was also cool that those who compiled this collection included the songs from the various Metal Blade compilations. I remember hearing "The Last Judgement" on Metal Massacre IV and being blown away in 1983. I also quite enjoyed the bands heavy cover of The Beatles "Come Together". Of all the material presented here, I think this was the only song I had never heard before getting this CD in the mail. Overall, "Demos & Rarities" is an interesting collection for fans. It offers a history lesson of the band and compiles a lot of rare material onto one CD. There are sufficient liner notes about each song as well. I am not sure if this was an officially sanctioned CD or if it was a bootleg release. It was limited to only 500 copies and went out of print as quickly as it was released.

Pure evil returned in 1996 in the form of ACID BATH'S "Paegan Terrorism Tactics". It started with the excellent cover-work portraying Dr. Kevorkian being controlled by 3 puppeteer rabbits and continued right into the intense, down-tuned Louisiana swamp sound, devilish lyrics and demonic song subjects. ACID BATH showed their horns with their debut "When The Kite String Pops" but unlike most bands they managed to top it with their sophomore release.

'You scream, I scream, everybody scream for morphine'…how's that line…pretty fuckin' cool I think. It comes from the wicked opener "Paegan Love Song" and is a great example of the demons in Dax's head. All eleven tracks continue in the same sinister fashion, some slow, some faster but all massive in their sound and quality. I got some other highlights…"Bleed Me An Ocean" where Dax's other voice helps darken the planet, "Graveflower" with its slow, melodic and dark tone is a bit 'like murder' to me, "Diab Soule" has riffs that Iommi wished he had thought of, "Locust Spawning" is near Death Metal in both its riffs and vocals, "Old Skin" has an incredible spoken word intro then continues with acoustic guitar from hell that has to be heard to be felt…yeah I could definitely do the whole CD justice in this way but you know what, I won't, you can just figure out the rest for yourself after you find a copy. I know a certain Paegan Terrorist whose favourite song is "Venus Blue". That's the power of ACID BATH, and to think this CD is almost eight years old now. Wow.

Imagine Satan and four of his closest, most evil disciples formed a band. Now imagine Satan and his buddies having access to the best weed there is. Dax is Satan, the followers are the rest of his band and they called themselves ACID BATH. They are a band no more but we all know evil shall never die. Find this CD now and become a Paegan Terrorist like me…you will be better person for it

Once, when flower shirts accompanied long hair together with loads of protest against American foreign affairs, with peace signs and free love for everyone, a new genre of music was born which we now call psychedelia.

Blue Cheer is a child of that revolution and have probably delivered the best work ever with their 'Vincebus Eruptum' record. So Blue Cheer still exist and we had the honour to see them on the latest edition of the Roadburn Festival.

So what can we expect after twenty years? We can expect the best drumming from Joey Hasselvander, the rough throat of Dickie and splendid guitar works from Duck. Blue Cheer isn't the best band around, but sheer volume and intensity always did it for them. Blue Cheer provided the blue print for many stoner bands today and the funny thing is that 'What Doesn't Kill You' sounds way more stoner than their debut. Maybe some technical stuff did help in that department.

But, the old stuff has the charisma and the authenticity of course. One cannot help that! But the power behind the songs is still there, the drive is omnipresent and Blue cheer delivers a mighty work, from bluesy rock tunes like 'Maladjusted Child' to slow emotional songs like 'No Relief'. An album that grows on you for sure. We are just happy that they are still around!

Death return after a lengthy 3 year rest with this amazingly technical, yet still quite brutal release. Following "Symbolic's" more technically driven edge, The Sound Of Perserverance was Death's last album and a highlight of Chuck Schuldiner's Career. Now onto the actual album. As i stated before, just from listening to the opening track, "Scavenger Of Human Sorrow", you can tell that this is going to be a great album. Following "Scavenger OF Human Sorrow", "Bite The Pain" is possibly the best song on the album, awesome riffing and soloing on Chuck's part. The next three songs, "Spirit Crusher", "Story To Tell" And "Flesh And The Power It Holds", are all extremely classy songs but are totally obliterated by "Voice Of The Soul". This song proves that Chuck Schuldiner is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Never have I heard so much passion and emotion being put through just from a guitar solo, absolute magic. Trailing "Voice Of The Soul" comes the extremely technical and brutal "To Forgive Is To Suffer". The intro to this song is absoulutely amazing and shows Richard Christy's talent as a drummer. "A Moment Of Clarity" has much more groove to it than all the other songs on this album which are much more speed driven. This brings us finally to Death's rendidtion of Judas Priest's "Painkiller." Death's version of this song is absolutely spot on. Judas Priest, I think is one of those bands that is hard to cover because all their songs are perfect already. However, Death pull it off with a lot of style and even manage to add their own unique twists.

Zillah play some brutally heavy Death Metal but not quite as you know it. Within the technicality associated with this genre there is also an element of Progressiveness and Jazz that sets them apart from the herd. Guitarist/Vocalist Roddy Anderson writes and growls some venomous lyrics and along with Andy Yates play some of the most technical guitaring I’ve heard in some time.
Substitute For A Catastrophe has taken the brutal sound to a new level of ferocity. There is no finesse here, this is something more than a sledgehammer to crack a nut; this is a lifetime of anger released in a deluge of eight songs that is a must for anyone who needs a shot of balls to take on the world.

Yes, pagan metal from Kyrgyzstan, it does happen! And to start right away, some damn good one! Darkestrah release their sixth album 'Epos', which contains one lengthy track, which lasts over half an hour. Boring? Not quite, this is the best material I have heard of this band so far! Atmospheric but aggressive pagan metal combined with some nice synths and a cello! It may be clear that I am very fond of folk and folk influenced music, so this album is pretty much to my liking.

It opens with the sound of an ocean, with an atmospheric guitar passage, that slowly starts to fade in, accompanied by some calm drumming, and after a calm, gentle passage it blasts off. They combine atmospheric passages with blast beats and acoustic parts in a way that is just simply brilliant, nicely done gentlemen! Just when you think the track is over, they add another, even better passage after it, especially after the 23rd minute. I have heard a lot of good pagan metal, but rarely a great composition like this in this genre, and that says a lot! Fans of Summoning, Dimmu Borgir ('Stormblast' era) should really buy this one, but any atmospheric metal fan, if you like heavy, black, death or power metal, try this one!
